The 'Mathaka' Initiative with SriLankan Airlines
The 'Mathaka' initiative, conceptualized by SriLankan Airlines' Environmental Sustainability and Compliance Team in collaboration with House of Lonali, is a groundbreaking upcycling project that transforms waste into valuable resources. This unique project aims to make a significant impact by reducing waste and promoting sustainability through innovative upcycling methods.
Showcase and Launch:
Mathaka was first showcased at the prestigious Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2021 in Colombo. The event marked the launch of a range of upcycled products crafted from the textile waste of aircraft interiors. These upcycled items include notebooks made from a mix of banana fiber recycled paper and fabric from seat covers, curtains, cushions, and blankets. By repurposing materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills or been incinerated, Mathaka exemplifies a commitment to sustainability and creativity.
Environmental Impact:
Over the past 10 months, the Mathaka project has recycled 163 kg of waste paper and upcycled 41.7 kg of unwanted textiles, significantly reducing waste and minimizing the carbon footprint. This circular process not only conserves resources but also highlights the potential of upcycling in addressing environmental challenges.
Empowering Communities:
The Mathaka notebooks are handmade by the Women In Need Organization, adding a social dimension to the initiative by supporting and empowering women through sustainable employment opportunities.
Recognition and Awards:
The Mathaka project has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to sustainability. On October 1, 2022, SriLankan Airlines was honored at the prestigious Smbrgaa GCAA awards in Montreal, Canada. The initiative received the global winner award in the Socio-economic category at the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Aviation Awards, presented by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This accolade underscores the project's significant socio-economic impact and its role as a pioneer in the aviation industry's sustainability efforts.
